Members’ Meeting – 13th March

Brian Healey will give a talk on “The Lost Mansions of New York”

Brian is well known to us with talks from “Faberge” and “The Golden age of the transatlantic Liner.” This time, we move to the so called “Gilded Age” prior to World War I. Huge fortunes were repeatedly lost and won as tycoons like Astor, Vanderbilt and Carnegie cashed in on the railway boom that swept across the American continent from their stronghold in New York and the famed Fifth Avenue. They built magnificent mansions, and out of town “Cottages” to rival the finest French Chateaux and Stately Homes. Their heyday was short-lived but the memory of their fascinating story and colourful occupants lives on.
