Welcome to the Family and Social History group.

The prerequisite for attending our gatherings will be membership of Knutsford & District u3a – see the Membership page.

Meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of the month at the Knutsford Methodist church, in the Main Hall of the church, 10.45 to 11.45 am.

To cover the cost of hiring the room, there is a modest cost for attending: £2.00 per person.

On behalf of the group’s members, I would like to thank Karen Oakes for continuing to relieve group members of their £2 entry fee, each meeting. Meet and Greet positions are much sought after, so if you would like to alternate with Karen, I know that she would be happy to share this enjoyable responsibility.

Dates of Next Meetings

N.B.  As ever, each meeting has a topic or two, but we are always keen to follow up on progress that has been made on subjects that have been previously aired, to reflect ongoing researches and to help newer members as they arrive and settle in.

Tuesday 18th February

‘The Role of the Census Enumerator’

What do you know of the trials and tribulations of the people (men, I imagine) who recorded the census details that we, these days, are able to access with such ease?

Unrelated to the above, we may have a presentation from a new member, Tom Weston, on his ancestors’ Atlantic crossings and the effects of The Great War on his family members.

Tuesday 18th March

‘Illegitimacy’

My mother used the generous term ‘love child’ to describe the status of her own maternal grandmother.  As the years rolled by and I revealed more of my own family history, I came across another half dozen examples of these twigs amongst the legitimate branches.  In my experience of this area of research, I find that the fathers were quite shy about stepping forward, hence a brick wall to further investigation.  I’m looking into ‘Bastardy Bonds’ aka ‘Bastardy Orders’ for the parish of Spofforth at the moment.  Please bring along anything that you might have found which sheds light on these stubbornly dark corners.

Tuesday 15th April

‘Apprenticeships’ and other non-parish recordings

Tuesday 20th May

Tuesday 17th June

Tuesday 15th July

No August meeting unless by popular vote

Tuesday 16th September, Tuesday 21st October, Tuesday 18th November, Tuesday 16th December

That’s another year gone.
