‘KING LEAR’

By William Shakespeare

Royal Exchange theatre, Manchester
Thursday, 22nd October,  7 pm

Please note early start!   Coach will depart at 5.15 pm
Price, including transport, £52.00

“How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is
To have a thankless child!”

William Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear’ is one of his most powerful and enduring tragedies, often considered one of his best plays.  The central story revolves around Lear, an ageing king who divides his kingdom among his three daughters based on their professions of love for him. What follows is a heartbreaking tale of betrayal, suffering, and madness that leads to Lear’s tragic downfall.

Lear will be played by David Threlfall – a familiar face from stage and screen for the last 50 years.  Winner of a Laurence Olivier award and a Bafta award, he is perhaps best known for playing Frank Gallagher in Channel 4’s series ‘Shameless’.  25 years ago he played Macbeth at the Exchange Theatre.

Tickets can be reserved easily using our On-line Tickets page.  Alternatively, you can send a cheque, made out to Knutsford u3a, together with a completed application form, to Margaret Hinde, 1 Warford Hall Drive, Alderley Edge,  SK9 7TR.  Tel  01565 872643.

Any remaining tickets will be on sale at the Members’ Meeting on Thursday, June 11th.

N.B.   I repeat – please note the early start of 5.15 pm to accommodate the play commencing at 7.00 pm.

‘THE ARMED MAN:  A MASS FOR PEACE’

Composed and conducted by Sir Karl Jenkins

SOLD OUT

Saturday, September 26th, 3pm at the Bridgewater Hall
Price, including transport, £48.00.  Coach departs 1.30 pm prompt.

‘The Armed Man’ is a choral and orchestral work, composed to mark the millennium in April 2000, and premiered in the Royal Albert Hall.  Since then it has become one of Jenkins’ most popular works with (in 2003) over 3,000 performances worldwide.  Just this month it was voted Number 1 in Classic FM’s ‘Hall of Fame’, making Karl Jenkins the first living composer to gain such an accolade!

It is a powerful reminder of the terror and tragedy of war, while offering hope for a more peaceful future, combining diverse religious and historical sources, including a traditional Islamic call to prayer, with words from the Bible and twentieth century poetry.  I am sure you will recognise some of the beautiful melodies.  It will be followed by more of Jenkins’ popular works.

To make this even more of an attractive afternoon, it will all be conducted by the composer, Sir Karl Jenkins, himself.

Organiser: Margaret Hinde, 1 Warford Hall Drive, Alderley Edge, SK9 7TR.  Tel. 01565 872643.

‘THE CAR MAN’
A Matthew Bourne ballet, based on Bizet’s ‘Carmen’

The Lowry Theatre, Salford
Thursday, June 25th, 7.30pm

Cost, including transport, £60.00
Coach departs from Knutsford Bus Station at 6pm prompt.

This is one of Matthew Bourne’s most popular ballets.  A dance thriller like no other.  It was first performed in 2000 at the Old Vic in London, followed by countrywide tours, including Manchester.   The musical score is taken from Bizet’s well known opera Carmen, so much of it will be familiar, but it has a completely different story.

It is set in the 1950’s in a small Italian-American community in the USA.  Bizet’s 19th century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy garage where the dreams of a small town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome and enigmatic stranger.

It is ‘full of dramatic juice’ and ‘sizzling and fizzing with lust’!  (The Telegraph).

‘Gripping, gasp making, edge of your seat stuff’  (Daily Mail).

For this performance half of my fifty tickets are in the centre stalls and half in the centre circle.  Prices are the same for each.   Only tickets for the Stalls remain on our On-line Tickets page.

Alternatively. You can send a cheque, made out to Knutsford u3a, together with a completed booking form, to Margaret Hinde, 1 Warford Hall Drive, Alderley Edge, SK9 7TR.  Tel. 01565 872643.
